BRYAN, Texas — A year ago 44 golfers took part in the Allen Open to help raise funds for Allen Academy, but adding a Heisman Trophy winner to the group made the 2013 version quite a bit more successful.
144 players, including Johnny Manziel, participated in this year’s tournament, which will raise money for Allen Academy but also will end up making about a $20,000 donation to Charlie Dina’s charity, the Texas Children’s Hospital: Cancer Center.
Manziel said, “I think it was first for the school and we realized we could do a really good thing for Charlie and raise some money for him and all the stuff that’s going on with him in his life. Allen Academy was open to doing it, and everyone here at Miramont was okay with it so it all worked out.”
Johnny Manziel wears a Charlie’s Angels wrist band for five-year old Charlie Dina and played in the tournament along side his mom Michelle, dad Paul, and sister Meri, who attends Allen Academy.
Johnny got things started with the ceremonial opening tee shot at Miramont this morning, and is excited to get a chance to help his friend Charlie and the Dina family once again.
“Just for Charlie, that’s the biggest thing for him,” Johnny said. “Getting to see him and his family and really just getting to spend time with them and doing anything to benefit his organization and anything for him that I can do is really big for me because he’s such a special kid in my heart.”
Plenty of big names joined Manziel and company at Miramont Monday, including former Texas A&M quarterback Bucky Richardson and head coach R.C. Slocum.
